Today, I met up with Debra to go do our Volunteer Field Observer grid for the COAST coalition watching for oil on the beach, broken boom, fish kills, etc. Rain was moving north, so we figured by the time we got to Dauphin Island and our grid, the rain would be gone. So, off we went. Had our sunscreen, hats, sun glasses, GPS, paperwork...and most importantly - our cameras! 'Cause we both like to take photos.
Unfortunately, this was a far as we could go today....The Dauphin Island Bridge. We decided to wait awhile. Debra showed me how to use the GPS they provide, looked at the grid and decided the best place to park, etc, while we waited.
A succession of boats came by...this small shrimper by the side of the bridge.
Some barges, some more shrimpers...
Finally, we tried calling someone to see if they could check the news for what happened. Turns out there had been a car/truck that caught fire, a fireman rescued the guy from the vehicle, but the bridge would be closed until further notice. RATS!
So, we turned around and came home. Maybe next week we can try again.
