Whirlwind Trip To Kansas

Just got back from a week long trip. First from Mobile, AL to Navasoda, TX, then on to Lawrence, KS, where my friend, Liz, was to get her new puppy.

She's a cutie! ( 8 weeks old)

It was a long trip and let me tell you that the Texas landscape is boring. Saw one coyote early one morning, then nothing but grass, cows, highway, cars, trucks, a horse or two, scrubby trees and dead grass.

Oklahoma looked more like you'd think Texas should look like....rolling hills, cattle and wide open spaces...lots and lots of wide open spaces. Until we noticed an abrupt change in the landscape...something called the Arbuckle Anticline. We stopped to photograph it and take a rest. It didn't last long...then back to wide open spaces.

Then we hit Kansas and the Kansas turnpike. Then we really saw miles and miles of miles and miles! Maybe a lone cow. This area was known as the Flint Hills. Very solitary....needed some buffalo.

Long, low hills...

Long vistas...

Not a thing in sight...

It was interesting for about 15 minutes, then we were lonely for some cows and horses, like we saw in OK... or even a house somewhere in the distance..( Having been in the van for 12+ hours by this time, you have to understand that we just might have been a little trip drunk by this time.)

Eventually, that stopped around Topeka and the land had more trees and was right pretty and populated.

After about 3 days in KS, we loaded up puppy and headed back. Needless to say, we had to stop more because our schedule was ruled by puppy! We did see more truck stops and rest stops on the way back than we did going. :-)

Back in Navasoda, we spent the night at Peaceable Kingdom, an organic garden in the Texas countryside. The dogs loved it.

A cord wood heart..

Out for a walk in the field with Oz, Guy, Darla and puppy in tow.

The big dogs were ready to run and sniff all the deer, bobcat, hog and who knows what trails.
The door to the Summerland cabin in the woods.

The whimsical faerie in the woods outside Summerland's north facing window.

We had fun, came home exhausted and I was so happy to see my own bed and the rest of my dogs.
